Edgewood State Hospital Videos
The following videos are all in WMV format, and will play in Windows Media Player. I recommend saving them to disk rather than trying to view them as streaming video. To do this, right-click the pictures and choose SAVE TARGET AS... This will prevent the videos from "skipping" if the network connection is slow.
Here is another video of the demolition. This footage was taken from the top of a Deer Park firetruck! The cameraman keeps the film rolling long after the building has collapsed, giving a very rare glimpse of what it looked like after the smoke had cleared. As someone on the video says, "Look at that pile of rubble!" This video is 7 minutes long and is about 19 MB. Thanks to Paul Obrien from the Deer Park Fire Department.
Clips from John Huston's classic "Let There Be Light". This is footage of the Edgewood/Pilgrim grounds during World War 2 when the complex was know as Mason General Hospital. At the time, the builds were brand new and in PERFECT condition. It is odd to see the buildings looking so perfect since we are all used to how they looked when they were abandoned and mercilessly vandalized. This video is 6 minutes long and is about 15.5 MB. For more information on this film, see this link.
These are the TV news clippings that aired on the day of the demolition, August 16, 1989. It includes video from NEWS12 and NBC 4. This video is 2:30 and is about 4.3 MB. Thanks to Eric Aup and Steve Arch for this contribution.
"THE ASYLUM" - This is a 7 minute video, filmed in black and white, in 1986. If offers a very rare look at the inside of the buildings, as well as an explosive ending. At the time this was filmed, the vandalism and neglect were seemingly beyond repair (and these guys certainly weren't helping matters!) The accompanying audio is fittingly "Sanitarium", by Metallica. It is approximately 12 MB in size. Thanks to for this contribution.

Here is a 1 minute video of the demolition of the main building. It was recorded with a camcorder from the traffic circle of Commack Rd. Thanks to Rick, Eric Aup and Steve Arch for contributing it to the site. It is approximately 1.75 MB in size.

We are looking for MORE videos of Edgewood Hospital. Did anyone else capture their adventures on video? If you have any video of Edgewood Hospital, please contact us.

Excellent, raw footage. How dare they cheer. :)
joe   12/28/2003 1:43:26 PM
As an observant friend of mine pointed out, you can see the first floor of the building was totally removed prior to demolition. Presumably, this was done to weaken the structure. One of the pictures in the PICTURES section will give you a better look at the "missing floor."
joe   12/29/2003 10:13:50 PM
THE ASYLUM video is awesome. I love the grainy, shaky, black and white filming. This video reminds me of the good old days when heavy metal ruled.
Sparkhead   12/30/2003 10:47:59 AM
The first floor was removed so they could properly place the shaped charges.

(And yeah, we cheered, you had to be there.)
db   12/30/2003 8:54:51 PM

Yeah. I asked my friend a while ago, shee cant seem to find them in a attic that has too much crap in it, but Im sure if I get her to clean that fucker out your head will explode when you see these pictures. I saw them, the last time when Edgewood was still standing. But I was like WOW. They truly are awesome. Hopefully it is the amount I recall. There were like at least 4-5 rolls of everything.
joe   1/3/2004 12:39:12 PM
A question about the Asylum Video - what was meant by the graffiti that read "Flame Retardant Japanese Ceiling Fan?"
JIM M   1/4/2004 10:04:10 AM
Yeah... Everyone cheered even the die hard people who went in all the time. The aylum vid is awesome wish I had a video camera back then.

I was at work the day it went down. Called my bitch at the time of explosion. She said the walls in our house shook. Damn, I wish I were young again. P.S.- (PRIEST! MAIDEN!)
uboat commander   1/14/2004 2:37:08 PM
Joe, 01/14/04 Real good prep.for the site. The raw video and still photos bring back many memories. Sad for me to say, but in all my early exploring of the complex I did not see the buildings in the sad state they are in viewing these photos. Once word got out it must have gone down hill fast. UBoat Commander
jds   1/29/2004 11:04:11 AM
JDS. 1st stepped into the bldg in 1977. It blew my mind. Then it blew out the basement windows and attic vents on my parents house when they blew it up. 1st ones in / last ones out. Priest / Maiden .

Its time to show Mr. iownit, the door. ASAP. His contributions to this site is BALLS!!!!! But yet he claims he has sick stuff.. So he claims. Nothing but a big bullshit artist. Terrible. He dosent even make any sense when he writes. Now it is a know fact on here, and through out the world, i have no use for small talk what so ever, and this guy is not up to par...AT ALL! He can call me if he likes, and we can discuus this matter if he prefers. Good day.

I rest my case!
Joe   2/27/2004 3:41:12 PM
Like it says, "Personal flame wars, senseless ramblings and posting of last names without consent WILL NOT be tolerated, and are grounds for membership suspension, no questions asked."

I do not have time to police what everyone says and does on here, nor is it a job I want to do. If people browsing the site see nothing but cursing and senseless ramblings than they may be turned off by it. Use the site in a mature, intelligent manner. If you choose to no longer visit the site because you can not abide by these simple rules, then I am sorry to see you go.

I am not singling out any one person with my comment. It is a general statement.
Wrathchild   2/27/2004 5:23:46 PM
To all, I can vouch for IOWNIT as far as being a true Edgewood veteran. To remove him from this site would be detrimental to the quality of this site. I know he has much to contribute and will do so in his own special way. So if there is a continued call for his removal then most of the contributors to this site, in the Spirit of Good Union People, we will leave with him. So toughen up a bit. Are you sure that you have been to Edgewood? Just Kidding.
iownit   2/28/2004 9:52:09 PM
wrathchild thank you for the true respect i deserve. i will keep you in my prayers. god bless .
Joe   3/1/2004 1:44:11 PM
Other bands play... Manowar kill.
gibson000   3/1/2004 4:52:10 PM
Just havin some fun :) .. I actually grew up listening to ManOwaR.

Wrathchild   3/1/2004 7:14:09 PM
it wasnt your comments about some rock band that i was refering to. it sounded more personal than that to me. i felt that those type of comments would be best if they were kept to yourself. and speaking entirely on behalf of the integrity of this website you should go back and edit your remarks by deleting the statements so as to not turn off anyone who would be concidering a constructive contribution to this site...
Joe   3/1/2004 9:45:38 PM
Yeah, Gibson - Clean up your act.
jds   3/2/2004 10:10:54 AM
wake up gibson. it was kind of known that halford was gay back in the early 80's. and nobody that went to edgewood was "pretty cool" most people were "pretty evil". TAF
gibson000   3/2/2004 11:07:21 PM
wrathchild   3/3/2004 9:10:11 AM
good, bad, or indifferent i guess its just human nature. you cant even see that no one was offended by your lame comments about some rock bands. it was your continued personal attacks of someone on this board thats problematic to most people here. are you sure that you are in a position to judge someone? you are just as guilty. you seem to perpetuate the "schoolyard mentality" of "he pushed me first". in order to be sucessful, this board must not permit this type pf behavior.
gibson000   3/3/2004 10:44:40 AM
There.. I deleted the ManOwaR comment because I did not mean it. As for the other comment **SEE EDITED VERSION**.
When I went to High School people used to brag about going to edgewood all of the time. These folks were not evil, they were just plain Metal Heads like myself. Some of them turned out OK, and some of them didnt. The Rob Halford thing was a JOKE!! Sarcasm. Sorry if no one found it funny. I took that out too in case I offended any HardCore Judas Preist, Fight, Halford, etc. fans.
gibson000   3/3/2004 10:44:52 AM
ORIGINAL COMMENT EDITED: (please ignore previous posts).

I find it somewhat amusing yet discouraging that there exists people who cling to a genre that promotes unessesary threats of violence. Although acceptable during the adolecent stage of life, This attitude becomes unacceptable during the ages of maturity.

I hope this is PC enough...

PS There were NOT continued attacks, I only made one post on the subject which I edited to a more acceptable statement. Hopefully
Joe   3/3/2004 10:55:09 AM
Don't be so soft, Gibson.
iownit   3/15/2004 2:36:57 PM

JIM M   3/22/2004 8:16:46 PM
haha......................... MAN thats a great story
cellar dweller   5/23/2004 10:23:12 PM
Many years back my friends & I used to climb in thru a broken door & climb to the rooftop. We would go there mainly on halloween night to freakout our girlfriends. After awhile it became a ritual at least one friday out of every month to go there! One time we went into the basement& found old civil defense food rations dated from Nov.61. I also ran 27 square miles of communications cable thru the steam tunnels back in 1984 for a company called UTC. I also witnessed an autopsy while installing a wallphone in the morgue. From my home in NorthBabylon I could see the tip of edgewood from my second story window..
Joe   5/24/2004 11:13:52 AM
Good stuff, Cellar Dweller. Why was there a need to run cables through the tunnels of long abandoned buildings?
cellar dweller   5/24/2004 10:12:16 PM
Joe, in order to accommodate other buildings that at the time were still operational, we ran cables from the geriatrics ward on the east side of the property out to these peticular buildings. The new telephone switch which my company installed was housed on the first floor of the geriatrics ward. The smell of urine&feces in this building was so bad , my coworkers & I would work for 15minutes then run out to catch our breath!
scud   5/26/2004 4:22:25 AM
the buildings were closed up in 1971, and they were definitely closed in 1984...are you sure youre not confusing edgewood with pilgrim state? also, does anyone know who took the third video (the one minute long home camcorder demolition from the traffic circle)?
cellar dweller   5/26/2004 8:22:09 PM
Scud, You might be right. Maybe you can help me. The geriatrics ward & the surrounding buildings just to the north of the old railroad station, would that be deemed pilgrim state or edgewood? Thanks.
Joe   5/27/2004 9:23:16 PM
CD - It sounds like Pilgrim to me. You are not the only one to confuse the two... Many people mistakenly called Edgewood, Pilgrim State.
Rotten13   8/15/2004 10:37:00 AM
I can't believe people were cheering when she went down. JDS, Manowar I know who you are Iownit I probably know who you are too. Bridge of Death!!
mudpaws   8/16/2004 1:36:02 AM
I want to know if that guy in the Grimers video who owned the hearse at the time was named Mark? Or if he sold it to a guy named Mark. I used to be friends with a Mark from N Babylon that owned three hearses, one of which was a Caddy like that one.
Joe   8/17/2004 12:54:59 PM
I have not seen Grimers on this site in quite a while.
tunnel king   10/4/2004 2:07:53 PM
I wonder if anyone was inside at the time and went down with the bldg. imagine, like a suicide.

JIM M   11/13/2005 7:04:14 AM
Great vid Joe.....
Mr No one   11/16/2005 2:44:35 PM
If you look carefully in the video shot from the fire truck crane you can see the smokestack of the powerhouse shortly after 102 crashes to the ground, it is a brief glance because after that it's obscured by smoke and dust.
Joe   11/16/2005 5:12:38 PM
Nice catch, Mr. I see it!
Rotten13   1/12/2006 2:57:06 PM
The funniest thing is in that grimers video, someone spelling metal wrong. At the end of the video on the wall it says Death To False Meatle.
Joe   1/17/2006 8:49:08 AM
Ha, gotta love The Grimers.
Mr No one   1/17/2006 10:48:50 PM
Well Joe I found out from somebody who's friends with the grimers on the lioddities boards what that "Flame Retardant Japanese Ceiling Fan" graffiti was supposed to mean. Being that Rotten13 brought up the asylum video again I figured I'd let everyone here know that it was just meant as something stupid and random that one of them wrote, if anyone cares to know (I know Joe was baffled just like I was).
Mad Matt   1/24/2006 11:16:08 PM
Great video from the Gimer's, and Let there by light. The Grimer's video makes me so envious. I used to get laughed at for listning metal, why couldn't I have been born 10 years early? I would have liked to give this place my own personal touch of evil. The army guy's seemed to come out ok even after all they had been through. I wonder why the civilians didn't experience the same results. It just seems funny that they go from one extream to another. First lock up every body who looks funny, or has a bad attitude. And when that dosn't work just let them become homeless and smash people with brick's. I just don't understand.
Paul   2/19/2006 5:27:16 PM
Wow, I'm amazed to find this site tonight (thanks dad!). I lived in Charter Court growing up and could see the building from my bedroom window as a kid. I was probably haning out there at least 1-2 times a week between the ages of 14-17. My memories are much like the home vid with the Metallica song! Amazing!
Paul   2/19/2006 5:29:13 PM
.....oh and Manowar does rule, yes. :)
falloutshltr6   8/24/2006 2:44:31 PM
i tell ya so much bickering i have been in all nooks crannies and all these tough guys were probablz the ones that ran out of the bldg when i would sneak up on them with my satan mask screaming LLLLUUUUUUUCIFER Out of the elevator shaft.
banffspring   10/14/2006 8:15:24 PM
I myself really enjoyed the video, i used to goto but thissite is better.a so called adventure. I envy them as well as many of you do ( the people in the vid) yet i have a lot of respect to the person(s) who keep this site going on, It was in fact the greatest place to let your imagination run wild back then. There is a connection between us all that post here. Truth is born out of arguements, so i see on here. I have a film of the demolition of the edgwater building, Brentwood F.D was filming it there. On VHS of course, But it seems that this website has sufficient film, especially the talented one from the class of 85/86. Due to limitations of films that i have, they are decent quality if that's one of the values you sort for. I now live far away (63.5 )miles from the 89' ground zero. But choose to take Commack rd to go back to my parents house instead of the Sag P.W.. Some things i dared to do whislt there in 87. tried to walk across the exposed eye beams that once held floors in place there. tried to understand what many elders wrote on the walls there, mostly rock groups that we all know that brings back personal memories. Tried to climb the Tower (smoke stack)seem back in those days ,the person who wrote their name on the highest peak won a mental game of an ego trip. Well i did not do it for there was shit piled high in the entrance. however, bet one of ya did manage to prevail. Still have atleast 27 papers on personal records that were scattered on the second floor. No c rations though. Found some keys there, still have one. Also have a pair of reddish rusted window bars (from Pilgrim ) a building sign in Blue and yellow writing # 86. Had an uncle may seem crazy to many, Once told me if my grades improved in school, that next summer he would take me to pilgrim ( facinated about the 2 smoke stacks that stood like beacons of hope LOL ) from the street i grew up on. Well i finaly went there that next summer, Mental defectives and peanut butter sandwiches, fake fur coats in the summertime, the place,, the HIDAWAY!! that was the name of this cafeteria, sat down with 2 schizophrenics, bipolars and word salad conversations. Beautiful yet at the same time, concerned about my well being. Thank you uncle, for showing me what most would cast aside. Edgewater was vacant, pilgrim was not. Edgewater was like Oct 31st everyday. I still think of this place, I found a picture of it from a Research book on ECT and Thermal baths. Framed of course in my bedroom hanging over the closet. I dio in fact remember a voice saying Lucifer, though not from an elevator shaft, seem to come from the areas that me and my friends were furthest apart, perhaps we were trying to scare each other from a distance. Had no spray paint at some visits so used the ceiling to write my initails and of course Slayer on the catwalks leading to the upper portions. Windy up there at the power plant, there was 2 levels going outside.leaned over the edge and marked the bricks v

Thank you Edgewood for all the childhood memories. I shall never forget .I posted this site on my facebook. I did some urban exploration at Pilgrim while on Vacation in May 2010 took some pics ,walked the Edgewood perserve found a hatch possibly to one of the tunnels a concrete cript. I hung out there from 1974-1979 and made some return visits in the 80s when I lived in the village ,and later in NJ came out on the weekends met alot of good people there partied hard in the day. I took pics did not want to incrimadate myself or my friends I regret not being able to find pics but thank all who did This is an awsome site
LDDavis911   2/17/2011 7:54:30 AM
I will never understand mindless vandalism. Why not preserve places like this for future explorers. These walls witnessed a lot of human drama over the decades. It deserved a measure of respect & dignity.
Joel424   1/25/2012 8:08:23 PM
I used to go in there with my friends from Cherubina Lane off Commack Rd in N.Babylon. The place gave me the creeps. My neighbor worked the kitchen there and spoke of all the patient sexual & physical abuse. Shame! No one heard their screams! :(
